JSON node
JSON Parse
Parse a JSON text string into structured data. Reports validation status and error details.
Inputs
| Port | Type |
|---|---|
| InputThe text to read as JSON. Empty or malformed text produces an empty result with Valid off and the reason on Error; single values like a bare number or string are accepted too. | string |

Overview
JSON Parse converts raw JSON text into a structured JSON object or array that other JSON nodes can work with. Connect a string containing JSON-formatted text, and the node attempts to deserialize it. On success, the structured data appears on the Output port with Valid set to true. On failure, Valid is false and the Error port provides a human-readable description of the parse error.
This node accepts any valid JSON fragment: objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and null.
Examples
Parse an object:
Input: '{"name": "circle", "radius": 1.5}'
Output: {"name": "circle", "radius": 1.5}, Valid: true, Error: ""
Parse an array:
Input: '[1, 2, 3]'
Output: [1, 2, 3], Valid: true, Error: ""
Invalid JSON:
Input: '{name: "missing quotes"}'
Output: {}, Valid: false, Error: "The data couldn't be read because it isn't in the correct format."
Empty input:
Input: ""
Output: {}, Valid: false, Error: "Empty input"
Use Cases
- Parsing JSON payloads received from TCP Client or Serial In nodes
- Deserializing OSC string messages containing JSON data
- Processing JSON text from file inputs or clipboard
- Validating JSON strings before further processing
Tips
- Always check the Valid output before using the parsed data downstream.
- The Error output provides details useful for debugging malformed input.
- JSON Parse is the entry point for text-based JSON data. Once parsed, use JSON Get, JSON Break, or JSON Array Get to extract values.
- If you already have structured data (from JSON Object, JSON Array, etc.), you do not need to parse it — those nodes already output structured JSON.
- Supports JSON fragments: standalone numbers, strings, booleans, and null are valid inputs.
