What's new · Grafit Pro 3.2

A graph that reads like a map, and nodes with character.

Grafit 3.2 turns the examples into a gallery, lets cables branch, gives every node an icon that says what it is, snaps nodes into line and shows what every port carries. Glow, shadow and fields become one node each. 381 nodes in all, and a free 7-day trial.

Free for 7 days

Grafit is a free download. Start the 7-day trial and every feature is yours, with no payment and no card; one Grafit Pro purchase then keeps everything for good, with every 3.x update and no subscription. Started the 30-day trial in 3.1? You keep all 30 days. If you bought Grafit before 3.1, you already own Grafit Pro. How it works →

The Example Browser is a gallery now: every example drawn as a card from its own graph, a large preview, Live Preview and Open as New side by side. Search reads titles, descriptions, the notes written on the canvas and the names of the nodes inside — “sound cubes” finds the right one, and one typo is forgiven. Seven new examples show Align and Layout.

A graph that reads like a map

Device and protocol nodes wear an icon of what they are — a camera, a speaker, piano keys, a network — beside a small glyph of their world: 3D, particles, ropes, sound, EEG, vision, real-world data, typography, layout. Math, Compare and Logic nodes show their sign (+, ×, sin, ≤, ∧), and a node outside the container it works in shows its glyph in amber. Square bottom corners mark where data enters and leaves the graph. Zoomed out, the glyphs grow and the graph reads like a map.

Cables that branch

With Smart Cable Routing the cables from one output form a tree and split close to the nodes they feed. Several cables between the same two nodes run as one ribbon and never cross. Big projects route in the background, without a pause.

Snap and arrange

Hold ⌘ while dragging and nodes snap to a straight cable, a neighbour's edge or the grid. The new Arrange menu aligns edges and centres, distributes with equal gaps and straightens a whole chain of cables in one step.

One place for each thing

Bloom, Drop Shadow and Vector Field 2D are new: one glow, one shadow and one field for every picture, where several nodes used to carry their own copies. 3D objects take their surface from a Material, systems their view from a Camera, scenes their light from Light nodes. Older projects open looking exactly as before — the new nodes are added and cabled for you.

Every port, in plain words

Hover a port and see what it carries — points, meshes, cameras, audio levels, spectra, EEG montages, MIDI keys — in words and a small picture, with whether the value is live. Pin as many panels as you like; they stay beside their ports. A preview even shows an output's picture when nothing in the graph uses it yet, and says so.

A deleted node does not go quietly

Delete one node and it clings to the canvas with chalk claws, or takes offence and walks off through a crack in the screen. Undo brings it back at once. Settings can pick a character or turn it off.

Fixes

.grafit files show the Grafit icon in Finder; 3D ribbons draw in depth; quitting during an example preview keeps your own project safe; Video Recorder no longer stops on Macs without the chosen encoder; Smart Cable Routing no longer freezes large projects.

Before 3.2

Grafit 3.1 went free to try and brought the world as sound — live weather, volcanoes and earthquakes as instruments — seven new synths, Voxel Waterfall, Environment Map, Layout and Align. Grafit 3.0 brought Advanced Output for projectors and LED walls, Audio and Video Link between Macs and Time Slice. Tour it on the home page →
