String node

Value Text

Turns a number into readable text for Text as Image: “Label 12.3 mV”. A float, an int, a bool, a point or an array (joined by Separator) all work; Decimals fixes the places, Unit is appended, SI Prefix rescales the display (12 000 µV reads 12 mV) without touching the value.

Inputs

PortTypeDefault
ValueA float, an int, a bool, a point or an array — every number becomes text.any0
LabelWords in front: “Peak” → “Peak 440 Hz”.string
UnitAppended after the number (µV, Hz, u, %…).string
DecimalsPlaces after the point (0…8).int2
SI PrefixRescale the display so 12 000 µV reads 12 mV and 0.002 V reads 2 mV; the value itself is untouched.booltrue
SeparatorBetween the numbers of an array or a point.string

Outputs

PortType
Textstring
Countint

How It Works

Value Text is the bridge between a number in the graph and a string a human can read. It takes any value on its input — a float, an int, a bool, a point, or a whole array — and formats it into one line: Label, the number, then Unit.

Decimals fixes the number of places so a live value does not jitter between three and seven digits. SI Prefix rescales the display only: 12 000 µV is written as 12 mV, 0.0004 V as 400 µV. The underlying value is never touched — this is presentation, not conversion. An array is formatted element by element and joined with Separator, and a point becomes its components in the same way. Count reports how many numbers were formatted.

Use Cases

  • A measurement on the render output — Envelope's Peak → Value Text (Label "Peak", Unit "V") → Text as Image → Canvas. One cable turns an analysis into a caption.
  • Chart annotations — Plot's Cursor Values or Selection Stats written beside the chart, in the same unit the axis uses.
  • A live readout for a performance — BPM, frame rate, a MIDI CC, a fader position, written large on a projector.
  • Debugging — Watch any value in the render window instead of hunting for it in the inspector.
  • Multi-channel labels — An array of channel means becomes "0.12, 0.44, 0.91" in one node.

Tips

  • Leave the Unit blank for a bare number; Value Text still handles decimals and separators.
  • SI Prefix only makes sense with a unit that has prefixes. Turn it off for degrees, percent, counts and ratios.
  • Set Decimals to 0 for counters and indices — a count of "7.00" reads as a mistake.
  • Pair it with Combine Text when you want several readouts on one line.
  • For the raw number as a string with no formatting at all, Number to Text is the simpler node.
