Binaural Shift

A precise full-spectrum frequency shifter (single-sideband via a Hilbert pair): every frequency moves by the SAME fixed Hz, so the offset between the ears stays one constant beat across all harmonics -- which a pitch shifter cannot do. Presets cover the classic beat bands (Delta through Gamma, Schumann 7.83), Custom opens exact frequencies, and Morph glides between Freq A and B -- cable a slow LFO and the beat itself breathes. Direction shifts the right ear, the left, or splits ±f/2. A creative experimental audio tool.

Inputs

PortTypeDefault
AudioThe audio to shift. Any engine source works — Audio Player, Audio Modular System, another effect, or a microphone.structure—
EnableOff passes the audio through untouched.booltrue
Preset AThe first beat frequency, from the classic bands (Delta through Gamma, plus Schumann 7.83 Hz). Choose Custom to type an exact value in Freq A.intschumann
Freq AExact shift for A, in Hz, used only when Preset A is Custom. Clamped to ±100 Hz; a few Hz is where the beat is felt, tens of Hz reads as detuning.float7.83
Preset BThe second beat frequency — Morph glides from A to B.inttheta4_5
Freq BExact shift for B, in Hz, used only when Preset B is Custom. Clamped to ±100 Hz.float4.5
MorphGlides between frequency A and B. Clamped to 0…1; cable a slow LFO here and the beat itself breathes.float0
DirectionWhich ear moves: Split shifts each ear half the amount in opposite directions, Right or Left shifts only that side.int0
MixBlend between the untouched signal and the shifted one. Clamped to 0…1.float1

How It Works

Binaural Shift is a true single-sideband frequency shifter built on a Hilbert pair: every frequency moves by the SAME fixed number of Hz, unlike a pitch shifter which multiplies. Shift the left ear one way and the right the other and the offset between the ears is constant across the whole spectrum — a real binaural beat, from any material, including a mono microphone (the node creates the stereo pair itself).

Twelve brainwave presets (Delta 1.5 through Gamma 60, plus Schumann 7.83) and Custom, with an A → B Morph, Split / Right / Left direction and a dry/wet Mix.

Use Cases

  • Binaural sessions — a measured beat frequency over music instead of test tones.
  • Stereo widening — small shifts (a fraction of a Hz) make a mono source breathe.
  • Sound design — large shifts are inharmonic and metallic, unlike pitch shifting.

Tips

  • It works after ANY source — player, microphone, or the Modular System.
  • The Beat Freq output reports the effective difference between the ears; use it to label what the listener is actually getting.
  • It honours every engine block size (64–65536), so it is safe at low-latency settings.
