Aura Synth

Modal-resonator instrument -- bells, bowls, marimbas, bowed glass. Add inside an Audio Modular System.

Inputs

PortTypeDefault
EnableTurns this synth off without removing it. Off silences new notes; voices already ringing fade out naturally.booltrue
NotesThe note stream that plays this synth (128 bins, one per MIDI note, value = velocity). Cable it from Pulse, a MIDI Receiver, Points to Notes or Hands to Notes.float—
PresetWhich resonant material the voices are made of — bells, bowls, marimbas, bowed glass. Values outside the preset list fall back to the first material.int0
LevelOutput volume of this synth. Clamped to 0…1.5 — above 1 it drives the tone into the warm limiter rather than getting louder.float0.8
PitchTransposes everything this synth plays, in semitones. Any value works; past about ±48 the resonators leave the musically useful range.float0
DecayHow long each struck note rings. Clamped to 0…1, where 0 is a dry tap and 1 is a long bell tail.float0.5
BrightnessTilts energy toward the higher partials — dull and wooden at 0, glassy at 1. Clamped to 0…1.float0.5
BodyBlends in a sine body under the resonators, filling out the fundamental. Clamped to 0…1.float0.2
WarmthSaturation: gentle analog-style thickening that turns to soft distortion near 1. Clamped to 0…1.float0.15
AnalogHow imperfect each strike is — tuning scatter, pitch drift and a living tail. 0 is machine-exact, 1 is loose and organic. Clamped to 0…1.float0.3
Pan SpreadHow far notes spread across the stereo field by pitch. 0 is centred mono, 1 is fully wide. Clamped to 0…1.float0.4
Vel BrightHow much harder playing also plays brighter. 0 keeps the tone constant, 1 makes velocity open the timbre. Clamped to 0…1.float0.5
Max VoicesHow many notes this synth may sound at once. Clamped to 1…8; 0 is treated as 1 (use Enable to silence). Lowering it thins a chord that is already ringing.int6

How It Works

Aura Synth is a modal-resonator instrument: up to twelve tuned partials per voice, struck or bowed, with an FM body and tanh warmth. Twenty-four materials cover glass bell, tibetan bowl, gamelan gong, hang drum, kalimba, singing bowl, electric piano and deep bass, among others — each material is a measured set of partial ratios, decays and amplitudes, not a sample.

Analog adds the physical imperfection: per-strike scatter, pitch drift, a living tail and even-harmonic grit.

Use Cases

  • Tuned percussion — bells, bowls and marimbas that ring properly.
  • Pads with a body — bowed mode with long decay.
  • The Composer's instrument — set Composer to Listen and let it write the part.

Tips

  • Decay and Brightness reshape a material far more than switching materials does.
  • Pan Spread places voices across the stereo field, which makes chords legible.
  • Add it inside an Audio Modular System — it is a child node, not a standalone generator.
