BrainBrick Device Input

BrainBrick EEG device input with 16kHz sampling and disk recording.

Inputs

PortTypeDefault
EnableOff disconnects the device and releases its buffers; on reconnects with the current settings.booltrue
DeviceWhich serial port the amplifier is on. 0 means None — nothing is opened; higher values pick from the detected ports, and an index past the list stays disconnected.int0
Baud RateSerial speed, from 115200 up to 2000000. Values outside the list fall back to 2000000, which is what the standard firmware expects.int—
ChannelsHow many electrode channels the device streams: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 or 24. Values outside the list fall back to 8; changing this reconnects the device.int—
Sample RateAcquisition rate, from 500 Hz to 16000 Hz. Values outside the list fall back to 2000 Hz; changing this reconnects the device, and the highest rates need the USB link.int—
Enable RecordingStarts and stops writing the raw stream to disk. Switching it off closes the file cleanly.boolfalse
Session NameFolder name for the recording. Leave it empty and the session is named with the date and time instead.string
GainThe amplifier's PGA gain as set in the device firmware (ADS1299: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24). With Vref it turns ADC counts into microvolts for every consumer — EEG Plot, FFT EEG, Signal Window and the Signal output.int24
VrefThe amplifier's reference voltage in volts (4.5 for the BrainBrick). µV per count = Vref / (2²³ · Gain).float4.5
Start AtCable Sync Trigger's Fire Time (host seconds). Enable Recording then only arms: each new moment starts a recording from the first sample arriving at it (USB latency, a few ms), the same instant on every Grafit. header.json names the moment.any—

How It Works

Connects to BrainBrick EEG hardware via USB serial for high-resolution brainwave acquisition at up to 16 kHz sampling rate. The MTL Data output provides zero-copy GPU access to the raw EEG buffer using Metal shared memory, enabling downstream processing nodes (such as EEG Plot and FFT EEG) to operate directly on the data without CPU-GPU transfer overhead. Channel presets configure the electrode count and anatomical labeling to match your hardware configuration. When Enable Recording is toggled on, raw EEG data is saved to disk under the specified Session Name for offline analysis.

Use Cases

  • Real-time brainwave visualization using EEG Plot and FFT analysis nodes
  • Neurofeedback applications with live EEG processing and visual output
  • Recording EEG sessions for later research analysis
  • Building brain-computer interface prototypes with real-time data processing

Tips

  • Select the correct Channel preset to match your BrainBrick hardware configuration
  • MTL Data connects directly to EEG-specific processing nodes (EEG Plot, FFT EEG Coherence) for optimal performance
  • Monitor PPS to verify the device is streaming at the expected rate
  • Set a descriptive Session Name before enabling recording to keep data files organized
  • The zero-copy Metal buffer architecture ensures minimal latency even at 16 kHz sampling rates
  • Electrode ordering follows the anatomical front-to-back convention (Fp, F, C, P, T, O)
