Comment Box
A visual annotation for organizing and documenting the graph. A Comment Box is a titled, colored rectangle that sits behind your nodes — it carries a heading, an optional longer description, and a customizable header color, but no ports and no data processing. Use it to label sections of a patch ("AUDIO INPUT", "FLUID SIM", "OUTPUT STAGE"), leave notes for your future self, or visually group related nodes without the encapsulation of a Macro Group.
How It Works
Creation. Select the nodes you want to annotate and press C: a Comment Box is created that wraps the selection's bounding box, with comfortable padding on all sides and extra room at the top for the header bar. (The C key does double duty — holding C and clicking places a Canvas node, so the box is created on key release, and only if no node was placed during the hold.) A box can also be added from the node library, in which case it appears at a default size of 0.4 × 0.3 Grafit units.
Editor behavior. Comment boxes live on a background layer: hit testing gives every regular node priority, so clicking a node inside a box selects the node, and only clicks on the box's own empty area select the box. The box is purely visual — nodes are never parented to it, and moving the box does not move the nodes it surrounds. Dragging the bottom-right resize handle changes its size (undoable); marquee selection, dragging, copy/paste and undo otherwise treat an unlocked box like any node.
Locking. The header carries a lock icon (also reachable via the right-click context menu, and as a toggle in Settings). A locked Comment Box becomes a true background object:
| State | Selectable | Draggable | Resizable | Editable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unlocked | Yes | Yes | Yes (corner handle) | Yes |
| Locked | No | No | No | No |
Locked boxes are invisible to normal hit testing and marquee selection — you can drag-select straight across them without picking them up. Only the header's lock icon and the context menu can unlock them. Locking also removes the box from the current selection.
Persistence. Title, description, size, header color, and lock state are stored on the node and saved with the project. Comment boxes respect the Macro Group hierarchy: a box created inside a group annotates that group's internal level.
Parameters in Depth
The node has no input or output ports — all authoring happens in its Settings panel (open the box's settings while it is selected):
- Title — the heading shown in the box's header bar. Defaults to "Comment". Keep it short; it is the label you will read at a glance when zoomed out.
- Description — a free-form multi-line text area for longer notes: what a section does, calibration values, TODOs, performance caveats. Empty by default.
- Color — the header color (opacity is fixed). Defaults to a blue tone (RGB 0.3, 0.5, 0.8). Color-coding by function — e.g. blue for input, green for processing, red for output — makes large patches navigable.
- Lock — the "Lock to Grid" toggle. A locked comment box becomes a background note that cannot be selected, moved, resized, or edited until unlocked via its header lock icon or the right-click menu.
Size is edited directly on the canvas via the bottom-right resize handle rather than in Settings.
Use Cases
- Section headers: box the Camera Input → Person Segmentation → Vision Tracking chain as "TRACKING", the Liquid Simulation cluster as "FLUID", the Canvas stack as "OUTPUT" — the patch reads like a diagram.
- Performance notes to self: a box around a Points Merge → Plexus cluster with the description "Keep under 5k points — Point Density before merge if adding sources".
- Show-control cheat sheet: a locked box near your Keyboard and MIDI Receiver nodes listing which keys and faders trigger which scenes during a live set.
- Handoff documentation: annotate the calibrated Constant values feeding a Liquid Simulation ("Force 1.4 tuned for stage camera — don't touch") before sharing the project file.
- Visual grouping without encapsulation: related nodes you still want to see and edit daily — unlike a Macro Group, a Comment Box hides nothing and changes no wiring.
- Draft markers: a red-headed box titled "WIP — not wired to output" around an experimental branch, deleted when the branch ships.
Tips
- Lock boxes once a layout settles — locked boxes can't be dragged by accident, and marquee selections pass straight through them.
- The box does not move its contents: after rearranging nodes, drag or resize the box to match. Select nodes and press C again for a freshly fitted box if that's quicker.
- Boxes render behind nodes, and regular nodes always win hit testing — so it is safe to make a box generously large; it will not steal clicks from the nodes inside it.
- Press C with a selection for the fitted-box workflow; the library route is better for free-floating notes not tied to specific nodes.
- Use Comment Box for annotation and Macro Group for actual encapsulation — the box documents, the group collapses and re-wires. They complement rather than compete.
- Header color is the fastest orientation cue when zoomed far out; pick a consistent palette across projects and stick to it.
