Array node

Array Make

Build an array cable by cable: drop a connection on the wildcard port and it becomes an element port of that type, with a fresh wildcard appearing for the next one. The first element types the whole array and the Result; elements keep their port order. Zip two Text arrays for a Transcription Corrections dictionary.

How It Works

Array Make is the primitive for authoring an array by hand, one cable at a time. The node starts with a single wildcard port and no type at all. Drop a connection on it and three things happen at once: the wildcard solidifies into a real element port, it adopts the type of the cable you just landed, and a fresh wildcard appears below it for the next element.

The first connected element types everything — every other port and the Result array take that type, so the cable gate will refuse anything incompatible from then on. Elements keep their port order, top to bottom, which is the order they appear in the array. Pull every cable out and all the ports revert to wildcards and the node forgets its type, ready to be something else.

There is no Count field and no type dropdown. The shape of the node is the array — what you see in the graph is exactly what comes out of Result, and Count reports how many elements are currently connected.

Use Cases

  • A corrections dictionary — Build one Text array of wrong spellings and another of right ones, zip them with Array Zip, and cable the pairs into Transcription's Corrections port. Brand names stop coming out wrong.
  • A hand-written palette — Four Color nodes into one Array Make gives a colour array for Points Visualize, a Gradient's stops or a Replicator.
  • Per-element parameters — Since Math, Switch, Compare and Remap run element-wise, an authored array of five numbers into Math × 2 gives five doubled numbers, and Points Visualize takes the result as a per-point Size or Rotation.
  • A fixed list of file paths or names — Several String nodes gathered into one array that a Loop iterates over.
  • Test data — The fastest way to hand any array-consuming node a known, readable input while you build the rest of the patch.

Tips

  • Reorder elements by moving the cables, not the nodes — the port order is what counts.
  • To change the array's type, disconnect all elements first; the type is held only while at least one cable is attached.
  • Array Make is the counterpart of Break Structure: one builds a list from separate cables, the other splits a list back into them.
  • For a computed array (a range, a repetition, a mapped transform) reach for Array Range, Array Repeat or Array Map instead — Array Make is for lists you decide by hand.
